The Principles of Group Psychotherapy
A Comprehensive Course on the Practice of Group Psychotherapy
(12 CEs, 1.5 days)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides training and skill development for mental health professionals on issues that are unique to the practice of group psychotherapy including a basic understanding of the theory, principles, and applications of group therapy. The course will include didactic presentations, discussions, and experiential simulated group demonstrations.
This course is suitable for graduate students and mental health practitioners at any experience level who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the practice of group therapy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Attendees will acquire the following skills:
- Identify the basic dynamic elements of the group formation model.
- Discuss the key issues of group psychotherapy leadership and coleadership, including styles, boundaries and problems.
- Differentiate between the key issues, basic theory, and associated techniques that are unique to each of the three phases of group development (beginning, middle, end)
- Identify basic countertransference reactions in group psychotherapy and describe two examples of transference and countertransference.
- Define the role objective countertransference plays in formulating interventions.
- Analyze the role that resistance plays in group process.
- Describe three types of resistance typically used by client-patients in groups.
